Lately I have been waking earlier than even my normal. Like 5:30 after daylight savings time! I am not tired when I wake, rather actually very motivated and energized. I am sure it is the quiet that is compelling me. The only quiet times for a mama are when the wee ones are dreaming their sugar plum dreams.
It is in the quiet where I can hear the voice of God. I do see him in my sweet children and in the lives of many I encounter on a day to day basis...but to hear him...
Like many of you, I have had a season of seeking, of a silent loom, of a feeling of being stuck- in all honesty. I deeply desire to hear from God. But, it has been hard to distinguish his voice from the ones in my head and the ones all around- most especially the negative criticizing ones. It's also a reality that it is so hard for me to find space. Even in the getting up at 5:30, my kids seem to know that I am up and tend to rise even earlier than normal. Getting space to hear once the day started is even more of a challenge.
I read the story of Lot and his family being rescued out of Sodom yesterday morning. The vision that came to my heart was one of the Lord scooping up this family like a mama bird and gently carrying them to safety, safety from harm, from the enemy, from certain destruction...but he used angels, "don't look back" angels.
Angels. Can you imagine being carried by angels? Angels that heed you warning that you can hear, while they are touching you, carrying you, being the hands and the feet of the Lord?
I can. And I have heard them say, "don't look back." Don't look back on yesterday's pain or disappointment. Don't look back at passed regrets or heart hurts. Don't look back at that person who wrongly treated you. Don't look back on missed opportunities or mistakes. Don't live there in the "look back". It's a path of certain destruction.
And it was for Lot's wife. You remember, the pillar of salt. The image of the "don't look back" is that of a silhouette of a person, devoid of life, of a future, of any hope. She could not will herself to trust.
How many times have I just lived there, existed in the "look back". It's a tempting and addictive habit, to look back. It's dark and hopeless. It's the opportunity to ruminate on missed opportunities or "what ifs". It's an easy place to revert to, an easy place for my mind to find. How about you? Can you relate?
God is in the "don't look back", extending his outstretched hand, leading us to safety, leaving the past behind and looking ahead, one day at a time, until we reach glory with him, an eternal safe haven, a carefully crafted mama bird nest, with the most perfectly warmed placeholder for each one of us.
I am reminded, this Palm Sunday, of our opportunity to keep our eyes focused on today and the promise of who holds tomorrow. Jesus endured far more hurt and pain than I, but he can relate to those naysayers, those hurt-filled words spoken by the enemy, those lies. He walked, one day at a time and trusted God, each step, one by one, even to the cross.
God gave him what he needed, only as the time came for each need...even the courage to face death. Living in the now, allowed him to be ready to serve at a moment's notice too.
The Message version of the Bible says it this way, taken from John 12:26-33:
"If any of you wants to serve me, then follow me. Then you'll be where I am, ready to serve at a moment's notice. The father will honor and reward anyone who serves me.
Right now I am storm-tossed. And what am I going to say? "Father, put your glory on display."
A voice came out of the sky: "I have glorified it, and I'll glorify it again."
The listening crowd said, "Thunder!"
Others said, "An angel spoke to him!"
Jesus said, "The voice didn't come for me but for you. At this moment the world is in crisis. Now Satan, the ruler of this world, will be thrown out. And I, as I am lifted up from the earth, will attract everyone to me and gather them around me." He put it this way to show how he was going to be put to death."
I love that this Scripture speaks of God speaking, and the thought of angels speaking too...
It takes hearing to listen to God. It takes living in the "don't look back" to accept today for today, to be present enough to recognize God and his many "moment's notice" service opportunities.
I am praying for the ability of my heart to listen to each little prompting of the Holy Spirit today and every day forward as I seek to trust, not looking back, thinking about the salt pillar silhouette of Lot's wife and how I can allow my salt to be sprinkled in the here and now, not wasted in the "don't look back".
Amen.
